At Synbiosis, we have pioneered the development of automated colony counting since 1985. Today we offer two world leading colony counters - the ProtoCOL 3 and the åCOLyte. Within these ranges you’ll find the perfect colony counting system to fit your budget and the level of sophistication your environmental monitoring and water sampling needs.
You can use a ProtoCOL 3 or an åCOLyte for microbial limits testing in air quality and water monitoring applications to quickly provide you with a precise total count. Both systems can accurately count bacteria (Staphylococcus and Bacillus) and yeast from active air samples on settle and contact plates. The systems are so flexible they can even count colonies on spiral and multi-sector plates, as well as filter paper on plates post membrane filtration.
With the ProtoCOL 3 you’ll find unique colour differentiation technology. So if you’re screening raw, potable or recreational waters to determine the presence of total coliforms or to count different types of bacteria such as Legionella on selective agar, ProtoCOL 3 can do this quickly and easily.
If you want to test soil flora or water quality by automatically counting fluorescent colonies of thermotolerant coliforms, Pseudomonas or Bacillus then the Synbiosis Proc UV is a safe, easy to use solution.
With the simple to use software in Synbiosis colony counters, you can automatically distinguish true colonies from debris or bubbles in the media. The software saves you time by effortlessly delivering you true to life images and count data in seconds, which you can store and return to when you need it.

ProtoCOL 3 is the next generation instrument for colony counting, zone measurements, (inhibition and AST), membranes, Petri-film and a range of other applications.
The aCOLyte is an affordable semi-automated (Click’n’Count) or a fully automated (SuperCount), colony counting device.
ProcUV images fluorescent colonies on small or large bioassay plates using a stand alone darkroom, a 1.4million pixel colour camera and internal UV lighting.
aCOLade colony counter is a reliable, easy-to-use device for rapid manual counting of colonies on any agar in petri dishes.
