The ProtoCOL 2, Synbiosis’ affordable colony counter now has a new Serum Bactericidal Assay (SBA) software option, enabling rapid counting of colonies post vaccine testing. The new SBA software is just one of the colony counting modules available for use with a ProtoCOL 2.
What is truly unique about the ProtoCOL 2 is the combination of its three coloured LED lighting (patent pending) and high resolution camera. Unlike most automated colony counters that use white light to illuminate colonies, the ProtoCOL 2 captures images of colonies in three different colours, which the system’s software automatically combines to generate life-like images of colonies as small as 0.043mm.
The results are shown on screen and an image library is created, allowing microbiologists to view plates, after they have been thrown away. These images are then analysed by for example, the new SBA module, providing precise counts of up to 300 sample plates per hour.
Other software modules are available for specific colony counting applications with the ProtoCOL 2. Each features powerful algorithms that determine true colonies by shape, colour and size and also defines separate colonies where the colonies touch. The software modules available include:
- Spiral plate counting
- OPKA plate counts
- Ames assay counts
- Multi-sector plate counting
All Synbiosis ProtoCOL 2 software modules are GLP compliant and can be easily integrated into a 21CFR Part 11 environment. The flexibility to add different modules means microbiologists need only purchase the software they require and can easily upgrade if the needs of the lab change, making a ProtoCOL 2 an unbeatable system for automated colony counting.
