Pharmaceutical manufacturing

There are two aspects to microbial testing in pharmaceutical manufacturing. One is to test efficacy of antimicrobial therapies and the other is ensuring that both drugs and the areas they are manufactured in do not contain unacceptable levels of microbial contamination. In the case of testing anti-microbial vaccines such as pneumococcal vaccines where a count of the surviving bacteria indicates efficacy it is vital to count bacteria on spread plates rapidly so these vaccines with a finite shelf life can be shipped to customers. Additionally, when monitoring microbial numbers in drug manufacturing areas it is crucial to identify and count these quickly and take remedial action to improve conditions before a manufacturing area has to be closed for an expensive decontamination procedure. These are applications where rapid colony counting can really improve productivity.
